The percolator is a somewhat simplified version of the moka coffee maker, which was once widespread. The coffee is loaded into a filter attached to the top of the percolator, and an electric heating element heats the water to a boil. The water then passes through the coffee in the filter several times before the system switches off automatically. After preparation, the coffee is kept warm.
